Learning Hale: Federal Title I education funding underutilized in Hawaii

Federal injunction stops State healthcare cuts to COFA residents

HONOLULU -- On Monday, Federal District Judge Seabright issued a Preliminary Injunction requiring the Hawaii Department of Human Services (DHS) to reinstate the medical benefits for legal residents living in Hawaii under Compact of Free Association (COFA). The order is the result of a lawsuit filed in August challenging the drastic health care cuts to low income residents from COFA nations. Read More

HONOLULU -- Oh the weather outside is certainly frightful going into the weekend, thanks to the showers, thunderstorms, and snow (for Hawaii Island) making its way across the islands. Kudos to Hawaii’s U.S. Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka for coming out in strong support of ending the untenable "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy targeting gay and lesbian military service members. Hawaii’s two U.S. Senators are now out. Our governor is out on this issue. Our two members of the U.S Congress are also out. And a strong majority of the Hawaii State Senate and House of Representatives came out in support during this past year -- some enthusiastically and others dragged kicking and screaming. $90 million released from Hawaii’s Hurricane Relief, Rainy Day funds for school days, non-profits

HONOLULU -- On Monday, Gov. Neil Abercrombie released $67 million from Hawaii's Hurricane Relief Fund to restore 17 instructional days for the 2010-2011 school year; and $23.7 million from the Rainy Day Fund for community programs as appropriated by the State Legislature under Act 191. Read More
